Extended Producer Responsibility is an environmental policy approach in which a producer’s responsibility for a product is extended to the post-consumer stage of a product’s life cycle. An EPR policy is characterised by :

1. The shifting of responsibility (physically and/or economically; fully or partially) upstream toward the producer and away from municipalities.

2. The provision of incentives to producers to take into account environmental considerations when designing their products. Who should get Registered under EPR Authorization? EPR registration is mandatory as per the Plastic Waste Management Rules, 2022, E-Waste Management Rules, 2022 Battery Waste Management Rules, 2022, etc for those entities which are producing, importing or are brand owners of electronic goods, plastic packaging, lead acid or lithium-ion batteries respectively. Steps for Registration:

1. Submission of Application Form - The EPR application form is filed by providing detailed information of the entity such as name, address and other Relevant Documents required for Registration.

2. Submission of Application & Review - Once the application is submitted, the CPCB/SPCB/PCC reviews it to check for the requisite information.

3. Issuance of Certificate - If the concerned authority finds the application’s information and submitted documents satisfactory, then it issues the EPR Authorisation Certificate for Plastic waste or E-Waste or Battery-Waste Management.
EPR Certification EPR Authorisation is granted by the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB) under the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Control of the Government of India. It assigns the responsibility of environmentally sound disposal or recycling of plastic waste, E-waste and Battery-Waste on the EPR holder. Following are the types of EPR Certification :
